Patchwork Trip to Magdalen Hill Down Butterfly Reserve

Last week the children at Patchwork Pre-School visited Magdalen Hill Down, a butterfly reserve just outside of Winchester, managed by the Butterfly Conservation. They were met by their guide for the day, Patchwork parent, Kate Barrett. On arriving, the children had a butterfly themed story, discussed the life cycle of a butterfly and were able to look at a real cocoon. After a snack and drink, they went on a nature spotting adventure, filling out spotter sheets along the way. They used magnifying glasses to discover bugs, leaves and twigs and had a fantastic time working together to find everything on the sheet!
To round off the morning they were able to access an enclosed area of the reserve, home to several Bronze Age tumuli, which are ancient burial mounds. They had a great time playing in the sun and lying on the grass cloud spotting. The morning ended with a circle time chat about everything that they had seen. They brought back colouring sheets to complete in the afternoon which were very popular! Thank you to Kate Barrett and Jayne Chapman for organising these activities and for making it such a fun and adventurous trip for the children. We are already planning a return trip in the summer!
